The Workshop
What is a zine!? In this intro class, you’ll learn to think in 2 colors, prepare any artwork to be printed for the risograph machine and how to think sequentially to make a zine. Each workshop attendee will get an edition of 25 half-letter 1 color 12 page zines, a zine from everyone else who attends and a 2 color single sheet zine made collectively.
Located at the TXTbooks studio, this 8 hour(4 hour per session) hands-on workshop will be limited to 8 participants per section and will be taught by Nichole Shinn.
The class will start with an overview of zine making culture, techniques and diy zine making. We will analyze and observe zine examples and discuss the variety of different methods utilized.
After the introduction we will collectively make a single sheet zine together in 2 colors in a collaborative building excercise. From there there will be a demonstration for file preperation in booklet format. (You are encouraged to have started your zine before the workshop but it’s ok if you want to start new…)
From there, the class will have a working session to prepare and separate your files to print with one-on-one help from the instructor. We will teach you how to get everything ready for a printer. At the end of the first day we will have begun printing some of the first layers on your prints. The following class day will be spent printing and binding zines together as a class.
After the second in-class session is complete, your personal editions of 25 one color zines will be ready to take home, and a zine swap is encouraged!
